Terrace garden in Hindhead

This terrace in Hindhead already provided a fantastic area for entertaining but lacked any plants, and being at height, could at times feel a little exposed. The brief was to incorporate more plants and help make the area feel more cosy.

A stunning backdrop of mixed woodland was brought into focus using Olive trees in large planters, linking the terrace with the view beyond.

I worked closely with the customer on this design, gathering inspiration and spending time together in the garden before making a plan.

The trees give a sense of scale, whilst creating a feeling of being transported to a sunny, warm climate, which the client was keen to achieve, having spent many years in Spain.

The Olive trees also set the scene for a mediterranean style planting scheme, using lavenders and many culinary herbs that could be picked fresh for use on the BBQ.

Whilst ensuring the main part of the terrace remained spacious enough for large family dining occasions, we introduced a part-enclosed timber-framed gazebo at one end, facing away from the neighbouring properties to provide a private, cosy snug that could be used for after dinner drinks and house a fire pit, keeping the area usable, even on a more chilly evening.

New flowerbeds in a small grassed area next to the gazebo worked to create another area that could be used separately to the main terrace. Upturned wooden sleepers continued the rustic feel of the gazebo and additional festoon lighting brought the area to light in the evenings.
