Three single-stem Amelanchier lamarckii underplanted with vinca major and spring bulbs break up the existing yew hedge. These trees are some of the earliest to blossom, plus turn a fantastic fiery red in autumn, therefore providing interest throughout the year.

Western red cedar was chosen for the new hedging. This blends well with the yew but is much more cost-effective. It provides a great backdrop for repeated Hydrangea ‘Limelights’ and Geranium ‘Rozanne’ to create a beautiful and harmonious display.

Geraniums are excellent companion plants for hydrangeas due to their low-growing habit, weed-suppressing foliage, and complementary colors.

A combination of drought tolerant planting such as Gaura 'Whirling Butterfly', Japanese anemones, lavender and ornamental grasses are used in the drier areas under the existing mature hedging.

Smart yorkstone paving flagstones give a sense of formality in front of the house and this is mirrored in the planting, using a mix of topiary pieces and lavender with softer perennials and ground cover roses.
